The market, which originally occupied 10 acres of land in South Melbourne, saw the first shedding erected in 1866 before officially opening in May 1867. Over the following 150 years, this valuable and loved institution has continued to serve community and visitors on a weekly basis. South Melbourne Market has also seen many changes and improvements, from the introduction of electric lighting in 1927, provision of a rooftop carpark in 1972 and the introduction of rain and solar capturing in 2012. The market continues to be a relevant, appealing and essential part of Port Phillip life.
